I sit i ponder i watch and wander
I look and see yet refuse to be
I am not a man or machine
Love bred sorrow and upon it's milk i ween
I am no man nor mortal body hold
My heart is strong yet my sould is cold
I can uphold your strife and pain
Yet in the end it's only for you the gain
I have lost but i am still a sheild
Your protected as my flesh is peeled
You are whole and strong and alive
I am broken weak and strive
I have not long left to live as i truly can be
But if my soul must die i'll die to make you see
Hold onto your love despite the blood and ache
And remember always not the pain but the love you make
This is my last breath my friend
tell me...tell me please...did i protect you in the end?

Try and get away from the cliches and end-rhyme scheme. It traps far more than it allows, it always sounds sing-song and it's hard to communicate anything with it and have it sound sincere.
